Hazardous Earth - Climate - Impacts of tropical cyclones on people and enviro Flashcards
High winds
Tropical cyclones produce winds of over 119 to 250 km per hour or more. Trees can be uprooted by the force of the wind.
Intense rainfall
As tropical cyclones move over the ocean they take up large amounts of water, this results in a large release of rain.
- lead to flooding
- damage to property and injury to people
Storm surges
A tropical cyclones create a large area of low pressure which allows the level of the sea to rise. When this is combined with the high winds produced . y the storm, a large mass of water can be forced towards land by the strength of the wind
- errode beaches and coastal habitates
- damage coastal defences
- contaminate farmland and fresh water areas (lakes)
Coastal flooding
The combination of intense rainfall and storm surges = areas at sever risk of flooding. Affects farming and tourism industries
- environmental impact-effect farming and tourism industries
Landslides
high levels of rainfall can saturate the soil very quickly. This makes the soil very heavy and in some ares, can slide down a slope.
- cause massive devastation to settlement at the base of the slope
- cause river flooding if the landslide blocks the river
What is the saffir-simpson wind scale
the most common scale to classify hurricanes. it measures the wind speed.
