Q

Storm surges

A

A tropical cyclones create a large area of low pressure which allows the level of the sea to rise. When this is combined with the high winds produced . y the storm, a large mass of water can be forced towards land by the strength of the wind

  • errode beaches and coastal habitates
  • damage coastal defences
  • contaminate farmland and fresh water areas (lakes)

Q

Landslides

A

high levels of rainfall can saturate the soil very quickly. This makes the soil very heavy and in some ares, can slide down a slope.

  • cause massive devastation to settlement at the base of the slope
  • cause river flooding if the landslide blocks the river
