Hazardous Earth - Climate - How do countries prepare and respond to cyclones Flashcards
How can we identify potential tropical cyclones?
1 Atmospheric pressure (Most common and gives the earliest information)
buoys are anchored in oceans and send in atmospheric pressure readings
2. Satillite tracking radar
3 Modelling
4 communicating information
What is modelling?
When atmospheric pressure data, seawater temperature data and information on wind speed and wind direction are put into a modelling program which then estimate likely tracks for a cyclone along with its intensification and dissipation
How do governments protect people before cyclones occur
- Activate defences (flood barriers, storm surge barriers)
2 Order evacuations
3 Prepare emergency services
4 construct emergency shelters and evacuation points on higher ground
5 Train people on how to be prepared for a cyclone (secure house/pets, prepare emergency pack, route for evacuation and what to take). This information is broadcasted on radio, tv, internet, social media, posters etc
How do countries respond to tropical cyclones ? (respond means how people deal with the effects after the storm has happened)
1 Rescue workers sent out (speed teams reach areas will have effect on how effective they are)
2 Provide food, clean water, medical care, shelter for victims
3 Repair and construct affected areas
Name important items you will need in your emergency kit?
Non perishable food first aid kit batteries matches in a water proof container water - at least a gallon per person battery operated radio sleeping bag flash light whistle can opener local map
