Hazardous Earth - Climate - consequences of climate change Flashcards
What are the consequences of climate change?
Sea level rises increases temperature Extreme weather events melting of the ice in the artic increase of forest fires habitats destroyed heatwaves
How will sea levels rising be bad?
Waterfront properties and cities will be underwater. this will be especially bad if they’re densely populated. land will have to be abandoned as jt will be flooded. E.g: Bangladesh will lose 17% of its land afrea and 50% of its best farmland.
New sea defences will need to be constructed= huge expense
salt water will contaminate farmland and groundwater supplies
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH SEA LEVELS COULD RISE BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY Variables. What are these variables?
1) Will greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise (increase the rate of warming)?
2) Will Greenland and antartica ice sheets melt?. (Greenland melts = rise 7 metres, Antartica = 13 metres)
3 Sea level rise will be higher in some areas because off prevailing winds and currents
Impacts of increase in temperature
- Sea levels rising
- Impact on food production=change where different crops can be grown
- Spread of pests and diseases= cold winters currently limit some pests and diseases
- Water supply = if glaciers dissapear then rivers will dry
- Peoples health
- Habitats will change
