Harnessing Biology & Inheritance Flashcards
What is Eutrophication
-Minerals are absorbed by the algae in the water
-Algal bloom occurs
-Light is then blocked from entering the pond
-Plants underwater cannot photosynthesise and die.
-Bacteria use up oxygen in water and die.
What are the roles of the minerals: Nitrates, Magnesium and Potassium/Phosphates
Nitrates: Help make protein
Magnesium: To make chlorophyll
Potassium/Phosphates: To make chlorophyll
Why would you use inorganic fertilizers instead of organic
As inorganic have a better rate of growth and production
Why would you use organic fertilizers over inorganic
Organic fertilizers keep the soil healthy and are cheaper.
-What are pests?
A pest is an unwanted organism which reduces the yield of your crop.
Effects of Deforestation
-Loss of habitats
-Loss of food source
-Allows more flood risk as there is no evapotranspiration as the soil doesn’t absorb water.
Why does deforestation happen
-To make housing, for timer or for paper
-Population growth
What do farmers feed fish in fish farming?
Famers feed the fish a high lipid and protein diet to promote rapid growth.
How do fish farms affect the environment?
-Fish may escape
-Parasites can be introduced into ecosystems
-Excess feed and waste can cause eutrophication.
What are the 4 bases in Dna
Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine.
4 bases in RNA
Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Uracil.
What is a gene
A length of DNA which codes for a protein.
