Hard and soft engineering rivers Flashcards
Explain Dam & Reservoirs?
The flow of water can be ‘turned off’ during periods of heavy rainfall. The water is stored in a reservoir so that the river does not flood downstream.
What are the advantages of Dam & Reservoirs?
- They are very effective at regulating river discharge (how much water is in the river)
- Most reservoirs can be used for irrigation, water supply, hydro-electric power, recreation
What are the disadvantages of Dam & Reservoirs?
- Very expensive
- Many people must be relocated as the reservoir floods large areas of land.
What are Embankments?
a raised riverbank (levee)
What are the advantages of Embankments?
- Raising the level of a riverbank allows the river channel to hold more water.
- It is an effective way to reduce the risk of flooding.
- Can look natural if soil, mud, stones and vegetation are used.
What are the disadvantages of Embankments?
- Expensive
- In urban areas concrete is often used to increase effectiveness. These are unattractive and unnatural.
What is Channel Straightening?
rivers are straightened by cutting through meanders to create a straight river channel. This speeds up the flow of water along the river.
What is the advantages of channel straightening?
The straight channel speeds up the flow of water. This prevents water building up and causing a flood. It is an effective strategy.
What is the disadvantages of channel straightening?
- Expensive
- It can cause flooding further downstream as the water can quickly build up there where there is no channel straightening.
- Sometimes it is lined with concrete. This creates an unattractive and unnatural environment and can damage wildlife habitats.
What are Flood Relief Channels?
A man-made river channel constructed to divert water in a river channel away from urban areas.
What are the advantages of Flood Relief Channels?
- They are very effective at regulating river discharge (how much water is in the river)
- During times of high water flow, sluice gates can be opened to allow any excess water to flow away into the flood relief channel and reduce the risk of flooding.
What are the disadvantages of Flood Relief Channels?
- Expensive
What is Afforestation?
planting trees to establish a woodland or forest.
What are the advantages of Afforestation?
- Trees slow down the movement of water into river channels (longer lag time).
- Water is soaked up by trees or evaporated during transpiration, reducing the amount of water being transferred to the river channel.
- It is relatively cheap and looks natural.
What are the disadvantages of Afforestation?
Less effective than hard engineering strategies.
