Threats which need to be taken into consideration by the patrol unit are:
(1) Mines
(2) Sneak attacks
(3) Small boat assault with small arms
(4) Small boat laden with explosives.
(5) Small boat assault with standoff weapons.
Depending on assets available, the harbor security boat unit should consist at a minimum of:
- Two fully equipped boats
- Command Center located ashore or on a floating asset, but separate from security boats.
Command center should be equipped with radar sufficient to allow coverage of the what?
Patrol area plus 2000 meters or better.
An overt patrol designed to ensure a visible deterrent to aggressor forces. This type of patrol places resources, personnel, and boats in the most vulnerable position.
High Profile Patrol
the closest approach to the asset that an intruding vessel will be allowed.
Standoff Distance
the area that will be patrolled and/or actively surveyed. Will provide multi-layered defense posture.
Perimeter
Patrol technique that is effective in a low threat environment with limited assets. Limitations can be overcome with use of spotter aboard target ship.
Single overt patrol
Require surveillance positions aboard target vessel. Provides info to the boat as well as back fire support if needed.
Single boat covert patrol
offers both visible deterrence and interdiction necessary in a medium and high threat environment. Enhanced with surveillance aboard target vessel, this patrol has ability to respond quickly
Two-boat overt patrol
Using one boat for overt patrol and the second boat as a covert reaction boat. Overt boat conducts routine patrol along route, while other boat is covert patrol who purpose is to provide backup or defense.
Combined patrol
Suspect Intruder Approach
Approach from the quarter and up both sides. It provides excellent view of vessel’s interior.
Waterside force protection perimeters consist of the following zones:
- Minimum standoff zone
- Threat zone
- Warning zone
- Assessment zone
