Hand Flashcards
Flexor retinaculum KNOW this!
it’s in your paperwork
What are the four compartments of the hand?
Thenar, hypothenar, central, adductor-interosseus
What three intrinsic muscles are in the thenar compartment
opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, abductor pollicis brevis
What three intrinsic muscles are in the hypothenar compartment?
opponens digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, abductor digiti minimi
What is in the central compartment of the hand?
Tendons of the long digital flexors plus the lumbrical muscles (1-4)
What is in the adductor-nterosseus compartment of the hand?
adductor pollicis and 7 interosseous muscles.
What innervates the thenar compartment muscles of the hand?
Recurrent branch of the medial nerve
What innervates the muscles of the hypothenar compartment?
Deep branch of the ulnar nerve
What innervates the contents of the Central compartment of the hand?
Lumbrical muscles 1 &2 are innervated by the anterior interosseous branch of median nerve
3&4 are innervated by deep ulnar nerve
opponens pollicis origin
Ridge of trapezium
opponens pollicis insertion
Radial side of 1st metacarpal
opponens pollicis nerve
Recurrent branch of median nerve
opponens pollicis action
Opposes thumb towards center of palm by flexing and rotating it medially
Flexor pollicis brevis origin
Superficial head- common with opponens pollicis (ridge of trapezium)
Deep head- Trapezoid and capitate
flexor pollicis brevis insertion
radial base of proximal phalanx of digit one
flexor pollicis brevis nerve
Recurrent branch of median
flexor pollicis brevis action
Flexes thumb at metacarpophalangeal joint
Abductor pollicis brevis origin
Scaphoid and trapezium
abductor pollicis brevis insertion
Radial base of proximal phalanx of digit 1
abductor pollicis brevis nerve
recurrent branch of median nerve
abductor pollicis brevis action
abducts thumb and assists in opposition
Opponens digiti minimi origin
Hook of hamate
opponens digiti minimi insertion
Medial(ulnar) side of the 5th metacarpal
opponens digiti minimi nerve
Deep branch of ulnar nerve
opponens digiti minimi action
opposes digiti minimi toward center of palm by flexing and rotating it laterally
flexor digiti minimi brevis origin
hook of hamate
flexor digiti minimi brevis insertion
ulnar(medial) base of proximal phalanx on digit 5
flexor digiti minimi brevis nerve
Deep branch of ulnar nerve
flexor digiti minimi brevis action
flexes digit 5 at MP joint
Lumbricals origin
Flexor digitorum profundus tendons
Lumbricals insertion
Lateral (radial) sides of Extensor expansion
Lumbricals nerve
1&2 Median
3&4 Deep ulnar
Lumbricals action
each flexes digit at Metacarpophalangeal joint and extends digits at PIP and DIP joints (bye bye muscle)
Palmar interossei origin
Origin-
digits 4&5 radial side of metacarpals
Digit 2 ulnar side of metacarpals
Palmar interossei insertion
Extensor expansion and base of proximal phalanx of the appropriate digit
Palmar interossei nerve
deep ulnar
Palmar interossei action
Draws it’s digit toward digit 3 AKA adducts
Adductor pollicis origin
Oblique head- bases of metacarpals 2&3, the capitate and other central carpal bones
Transverse head-body of metacarpal 3
Adductor pollicis insertion
Medial side of base of proximal phalanx of thumb.
Adductor pollicis nerve
Deep ulnar
Adductor pollicis action
Adducts thumb toward digit 3
Dorsal interossei origin
Adjacent sides of metacarpals(bipennate, feather like)
dorsal interossei insertion
Extensor expansion and base of the proximal phalanx of the appropriate digit.
dorsal interossei nerve
deep ulnar
dorsal interossei action
draw that digit away from digit 3 AKA abduct
