Halogens Flashcards
What is produced in a reversible reaction between chlorine and water?
Chloric (I) acid, HClO and HCl.
What is disproportionation in the context of reversible redox reaction?
Where the oxidation state of some atoms of the same element increase and others decrease.
What is Chloric (I) acid used for?
Used to purify water for drinking and swimming to prevent life-threatening diseases.
Why is Chloric (I) acid an effective bleach?
It is an oxidising agent and kills bacteria by oxidation.
Other than microbes and bacteria, what does chlorine remove from water?
Iron and manganese.
Why is the use of chlorine in water controversial?
Chlorine produced THMs which cause cancer
Chlorine is toxic.
What is the pattern for m.p. and b.p. in group 7 and why does this occur?
It increases going down due to increased intermolecular forces.
What group are the halogens in?
7
