Alkenes Flashcards
Why are Alkenes insoluble in water?
Water molecules are held together by hydrogen bonds, which are much stronger than van der Waal’s forces that act between Alkene molecules.
What are addition polymers?
They are made from a monomer or monomers with a carbon-carbon double bond (Alkenes).
What is a carbocation?
An organic ion in which one of the carbon atoms has a positive charge.
What is an electrophile?
An electron-deficient atom, ion or molecule that takes part in an organic reaction by attacking areas of high electron density in another reactant.
What is a monomer?
A small molecule that combines with many monomers to form a polymer.
What is the positive inductive effect?
The tendency if some atoms or groups of atoms to release electrons via a covalent bond.
What are position isomers?
Isomers with the double bond in different positions.
What are geometric isomers?
Form of stereoisomerism, have the same structural formal, but the bonds are arranged differently in space.
What causes polyalkenes to not be biodegradable?
They have a long saturated chain as a backbone, so they are very unreactive and so are not attracted by biological agents.
