Energetics Flashcards
What happens to the rate of reaction if you increase the concentration?
There are more particles in a given volume, so collisions are more likely and the reaction rate is faster.
What is the definition for activation energy?
Minimum energy with which particles must collide in order to react.
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons.
What is reduction?
Gain of electrons.
What are oxidising agents?
Electron acceptors.
What are reducing agents?
Electron donors.
Is a thermite reaction exothermic or endothermic and what is it used for?
Exothermic, displacement reaction between aluminium and iron oxide to weld railway lines together.
Oxidation rules.
What is the oxidation number of any element, e.g. Cl2
0
Cl=0
Oxidation rules
What is the oxidation number of an element existing as a monatomic ion?
The charge of the ion.
Redox equation rules
What do the half equations represent?
The reduction and oxidation.
Redox equation rules
How do you balance the oxidation number.
Multiply the number of electrons by the number of electrons in the other half equations.

How do you balance the oxygen?
Add water

How do you balance the Hydrogen?
Add Hydrogen ions.
