Q

testing for halides steps

A

-add dilute HNO3 to each test tube of unknown aqueous halide
-add aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO3)
F- gives no precipitate
Cl- gives white ppt
Br- gives cream ppt
I- gives yellow ppt

Q

if adding silver nitrate gives ppts which are hard to distinguish, what further steps and observations should be taken?

A
  • add dilute ammonia to each test tube
  • Cl- ppt dissolves in dilute ammonia
  • Br- ppt dissolves in conc. ammoina
  • I- is insoluble in dilute and conc. ammonia, so no change.
