Haloalkanes Flashcards
Bond enthalpy
energy required to break one mole of gaseous bonds
CFC
class of compound made from carbon, fluorine and chlorine ONLY - they can be broken down by UV in the upper atmosphere, forming chlorine radicals which catalyse the breakdown of ozone
Haloalkane
an organic compound containing a halogen atom bound to an alkyl chain
hydrolysis
a reaction where water or aqueous hydroxide ions breaks a compound into two compounds
nucleophile
an atom or group of atoms which donates a pair of electrons to form a new covalent bond (electron pair donor)
nucleophillic substitution
reaction in which an electron pair donor (nucleophile) attacks an electrophillic atom (atom with a full or partial positive charge) to replace an atom or group of atoms
