where is holderness?
yorkshire, north east coastline
why is holderness one of the fastest eroding coastlines in europe?
Lack of LSD from the north
glaciall till, unlithified rock, could be cut by a shovel
low value land (agricultural) so no funds to protect under 5 to 1 principle
high land, no flood risk
what is spern head?
a huge spit further south, caused by huge amounts of erosion at Holderness
where is Hallsands?
South Devon
what happened at Hallsands?
in the 1890’s the naval dockyard at Keyham, near Plymouth was decided it needed to be expanded. sediment was dredged offshore of Hallsands.
the Beach’s sediment slid down to replace the origional sediment. eventually in 1917 high storm tides caused the village to fall into the sea.
how big was Hallsands before it fell into the sea in 1917?
population of 159 in 1891 and had 37 houses aswell as a pub named the London inn
where is pevensey bay?
east sussex
what happens at Pevensey bay?
Sospaun dau, the split bottom hopper dredger deposits 25,000 cubic metres of sand onto the beach at pevensey. the sediment is then pushed up the beach (beach replenishment)
where is shanghai and where is the pudong development?
megacity on the east coast of china.
pudong development is 15 miles east of Shanghai
what has been done in the pudong development?
siltation walls have encouraged deposition and create new land from the fluvial deposits of the Yangtze river.
over 100 miles of reclaimed land, new pudong airport and Nanhui city have been built.
coast has been manipulated for economic opportunities/advantage
