  • Structural Adjustment programmes (SAP’s) for countries who experience severe financial difficulties.
  • Borrowing countries must make concessions such as privatising national services, as well as pulling funding from inefficent industries. as such some say these loans exacerbate poverty by undermining the economic sovereignty of borrowing states.

  • critics say the USA and Europe exert to much political influence over what is supposed to be a neutral organisation. some say the states that are loaned money have to give up some political control in exchange for funding.

  • since 1995 this organisation has promoted free trade and aimed to settle trade disputes.
  • hard to get 162 member nations to agree on anything, which may explain why talks in 2001 were stalled for 14 years.
  • fast growth of emerging economies such as China make it harder to agree on fair policies for so called devloping countries.
