Herpetic Whitlow
Herpetic infxn of the cuticle region.
Seen in kids and healthcare workers
Self-limiting
Onychocryptosis
Ingrown nail
Nail enters the dermis
Poorly fitting shows is a big cause
Androgenic Alopecia
Symmetrical hair loss
Begins in fronto-parietal scalp and moves back
FInasteride (Propecia)
Can be used to trigger hair growth.
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Works better in younger men who have been balding for less than 10 yrs
Alopecia Areata
Autoimmune process against follicle.
Rapid hair loss in distinct, well-defined round or oval patches of complete loss.
Associated with other autoimmune dz
Alopecia Areata tx
80% see spontaneous regression.
Intralesional steroids
Rogaine
Telogen Effluvium
Thinning and shedding of hair resulting from early entry of hair into telogen phase.
Stress, postpartum
Malnutrition, crash dieting
Trichotillomania
Impulse control disorder where patient pulls out hair.
Dominant side
tx w/ SSRI’s, CBT
