Haemostasis Flashcards
What does heamostasis mean?
To stop bleeding from a cut or injury to prevent further injury
Describe haemostasis ?
Process of forming clots in the walls of damaged blood vessels and preventing blood loss
What is vasoconstriction
When muscles contract
Platelets meet damaged blood vessel clot needs to form
Platelet plug
Platelets stick to damaged endothelium to form platelet plug, temporarily sealing the break in vessel wall
What is thrombopoietin?
A hormone produced by the liver and kidney which regulates production of platelets
Haemostasis involves the following process?
Vasoconstriction
Formation of platelet plug
Blood coagulation
How does haemostasis begin?
Begins with chemicals being released from damasked tissue cells extrinsic pathway and form platelets intrinsic pathway
Extrinsic
Intrinsic
Extrinsic occurs immediately
Intrinsic is slower
Blood clotting factors
Thromboplastin
Prothrombin
Fibrinogen
What is the von williebrand factor?
Protein secreted by endothelial cells that connects platelets to collagen
Explain Von williebrand disease
Inherited bleeding disorder from low levels of von williebrand factor
