Central Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 2 main parts of the nervous system
Central nervous system - brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system - connects everything to brain and spinal cord
What is the central nervous system made up of?
Brain and spinal cord - Crainial nerves & spinal nerves
What is the pheripheral system?
Consists of all nerves outside brain and spinal cord
Mixed nerves within the spinal cord are
Sensory and motor nerves
What are the different types of neurone?
Muscle
Sense
Motor neurone split into 2 nervous systems called
Somatic nervous system
&
Autonomic nervous system
What is the somatic nervous system
Voluntary movements via skeletal muscle
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Organs, smooth muscles
What is the brain responsible for?
Thinking
Memory
Emotion
Corpus callosum
Connects the brains right and left hemispheres
Cerebral cortex functions
Higher level processes of the brain
Intelligence
Recognising sounds and images
Memory
Cerebellum
Important for coordination
Precision and timing of movement
Brain stem
Regulates heart rate
Breathing sleep cycles
Emotions
Brain meninges (layers to protect the brain)
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia matter (helps contain cerebrospinal fluid)
Brain and 5 parts
Midbrain
Pons
