Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the function of endocrine system?
Regulates the body’s metabolic activities
Hormone released in response to a specific stimulus & usually its action reverses the stimulus through what?
NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
amplifies the stimulus & increases release of hormone until a particular process is complete & stimulus ceases
POSITIVE FEEDBACK
What is the function of the thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland controls metabolism
What is the function of parathyroid?
Controls the level of calcium in blood
Which endocrine does the pancreas produce?
Insulin
What is the name for the area the pancreas produces the endocrine?
The islets of langerhans
What does the pituitary gland do?
Secrets hormones that stimulate and regulate other endocrine glands
The pituitary gland & hypothalamus what do they do?
They are linked by stalk
Hypothalamus releases factors which in turn stimulate release of pituitary hormones
The pituitary gland has two main regions
The anterior pituitary- adenohypophysis
The posterior pituitary -
Neurohypophysis
adenohypophysis
Produces at least 6 hormones
Growth hormone (GH)
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
Prolactin
(GNRH)
(FSH)
(LH)
What is the hormone prolactin
This hormone stimulates milk production
Neurohypophysis
Makes up 25% of the gland
Disorders of the pituitary gland
Growth hormone deficiency - underproduction of growth hormone
Diabetes insipidus - underproduction of ADH
Pituitary adenoma - overproduction of any pituitary hormone
Hypopituitarism- underproduction of any pituitary hormone
