Blood Flashcards
What is blood?
Connective tissue
Composed of 55% plasma
Cells suspend within 45%
What are the functions of blood?
Transports oxygen
Transports nutrients
Transports heat
What is plasma composed of?
90% water
10% dissolved substances
What is fibrinogen?
Produced in the liver
Important in the process Of blood clotting
What is prothrombin?
Essential in blood coagulation
Vitamin K is essential for its formation
What is serum?
Plasma which clotting factors have been removed
What are transported substances in blood?
Enzymes
Hormones
Nutrients
Dissolved gasses
What are Erythrocytes?
Red blood cells formed in the red bone barrow
They have no nucleus
Transport oxygen
They are biconcave to increase surface area for gas exchange.
Where are erythrocytes destroyed?
Spleen
Erythrocyte disorders?
Iron deficiency anaemia
Sickle cell anaemia
Vitamin B12 deficiency
What are thrombocytes?
Platelets that are important in blood clotting
No nucleus
Those not used in haemostasis are destroyed in spleen
Thrombocyte disorders?
Thrombocytopenia - reduced platelet production
Haemophilia
Von willebrands disease
Describe transported nutrients?
Vitimans, amino acids, fatty acids
What is haemoglobin
An iron containing protein
Plasma proteins in blood include
Albumin
Globulin
Fibrinogen
Prothrombin
