Define equality
‘sameness’ this is when you treat everyone the same
Define equity
Distribution of resources and services based on the individual needs of the people.
Define efficiency
The allocation of limited economic resources to meet the healthcare needs of a society to maximise health outcomes.
What is vertical equity?
Different healthcare for different needs
What is horizontal equity?
equal healthcare for equal needs
What does equity and efficiency depend on?
- Need
- Demand
- Supply
What is the inverse care law?
Areas that require good medical care tend to not have it available.
The factors that can influence these are:
- Poor quality of service
- Poor accessibility to service
- Other external disadvantages.
What are the determinants of health?
- Genetic
- Individual lifestyle factors
- Social factors & community
- Working and living conditions
- Wider socioeconomic conditions, culture traits etc
What is the three categories of a needs assessment?
- Epidemiological - Who is the population, will they benefit from the change
- Comparative - how does this compare with other populations
- Corporate - who has the final decision making stake?
What are the stages of dealing with an unmet need?
- Have a problem
- Identify the problem
- Eligible for intervention?
- Provide optimal intervention
- Compliance with program.
