Inspecting and palpating the lungs (Posterior)
Chest expansion with deep inspiration
When auscultating the lungs POSTERIORLY, instruct the patient to
Breathe deep with MOUTH OPEN
CROSS ARMS across chest
Inspecting the lungs (Anterior)
Anterior chest for rhythm and respiratory effort during quiet breathing and with deep inspiration
Palpating the lungs (Anterior)
Tenderness, masses, lesions
When auscultating the lungs ANTERIORLY, instruct the patient to
Breathe deep with MOUTH OPEN
Inspecting the heart for
Precordium for pulsations or heaves
Palpating the heart
with ball of hands = “heaves or thrills”
