1559 e taken on several prot councillors - cecil bacon knollys. Opening_ e chose cox (returning exile) to preach the sermon. He& other exiles pressure e to destroy current cath settlement. In sermon he attacked monks/friars called on e to destroy religious images/monasteries (re founded by m)

Appeased conserve op giving e supreme gov rather than head= didnt claim she was a priest. Marian statutes swept away on religion. H statutes on church and admin and organisation revived. Oath to b taken by clergy. Judges Crown servants swearing agree with act and uphold queens control of church

Act of uniformity & 1559 prayer book

A

Act of unif= 1559 prayer book. Privy council and prot divines aided. E prob favoured more moderate 1549 prayer book but faced w group of councillors and rad prots. Result= compromise based on 1559 but including moderating clauses. Offensive references to pope omitted 1552 black rubric removed=By removing both cath/prot believe in transub. Inc words of both ed prayer books= allows latitude for belief. Penultimate clause= brought back clerical vestments & ornaments =infuriated reformers. Only got3 votes=clear belief in cath doc=strong

Commissioners eventually appointed to render oath of suprem to bish & higher clergy but all bishops except 1 refused oath and deprived of offices. E nominated bishops inc parker grindal and jewel but not enthroned until 1559

A

E appointed royal commissioners to conduct visitations in eng/wales. Administered oath of sup to lower clergy only limited opp 200/4000 lower clerg deprived for refusing. Some Cath clerg managed to evade oath bcz influence of sympathetic local patrons

A

Commissioners delivered. Drawn up by e. Preaching only taken by preachers or clergy licensed by bishop. Only once month free hand. Other sundays read from book of homilies. 4 times a yr to preach of value/legitimacy of royal supre. Eng bible in every church. Copy of erasmus paraphrases. Clergy to devote time to spiritual education of young. Shrines/images/monuments to superstition removed. Books/pamphlets on religious themes to be licensed commissioners or 6membs of council or bishops. Clergy to wear garments as of Eds reign. Alters not to be torn down but converted to communion tables stood where alters were stood ie eastern end=cat

Modification of eds 42arts. Parker abc drew arts. 7/42 dropped, 4added , 17 modified. Arts could b interpreted differently. Calvins predest moderated to prot sensibilities. Explained Es supremacy advantageous to sovereign. E added art 20 confirming her right to alter liturgy deleted 29. 1563-67 (when bish restored missing art) e decided church only need 38arts

Stated there will b no investigation of ppls beliefs as long as not overly rad. Foxes book of martyrs 1563 reminded of harsh persecutions. Lancashire only 12clergymen deprived of livings in1559 visitations. Nobility not made to take supremacy oath. 1563 statue=death penalty for 2nd refusal of oath but e instructed archbishop not to ask anyone twice. Not enforced in terms of non attendance. Cath recusants fined 1 shilling only few fines. Could not enforce uniformity variety of local factors inc varied services/prayers
