What is a trend
A trend means the ways in which something is developing or changing and becoming more known and/or popular.
Examples of how H and C businesses use trends
Satellite technology and beacons: these show people on their mobile phones their location or the directions to another location.
They are also used by businesses to -
• Find would-be customers and show them nearby restaurants, hotels, bars, etc.
• Give them links to the services provided so they can choose what to eat or drink.
Customer Relationship Management systems (CRMs) : these enable customers to make online bookings, order food and drinks, etc., directly to a H&C business.
A restaurant, for example, then knows how many customers are expected and can manage its kitchen, ordering and customer needs more efficiently.
social media: this enables businesses to receive (feedback (good and bad) from customer who write reviews and send photographs or videos of their experiences to other people
Smart devices linked to smartphones : devices such as smart watches linked to smartphones use apps to monitor things and allow people to send requests or instructions to other devices.
H and C businesses are using this technology to enable customers to:
• Place orders for food, etc., when they are elsewhere
• Check in to hotels ontine
• Unlock their hotel room door with a smart watch or similar device
• Control their TV, hotel room heating, lighting, etc.
How does the H and C use environmental sustainability as a trend
• Food packaging:
- Buying food with minimum amounts of packaging
- Buying food with biodegradable packaging that will naturally break down in the soil
- Not using individual sachets/packets of sauces, sugar, butter, etc.
• Food waste:
- Reducing portion sizes served to customers
- Providing containers for customers to take left-over food home to eat later
- Passing on good quality left-over foods to food charities to make into meals for people who do not have enough money for all the food they need
- Turning food waste into compost to grow vegetables and herbs
- Making stock from vegetable peelings and off-cuts and poultry and meat bones
- Storing food correctly so that it is not wasted.
• Disposable items:
- Not using disposable plastic cutlery and drinking straws
- Not using paper or plastic plates, dishes, serviettes, tablecloths, etc.

Positives of media on the H and C business
A very large number of customers (a customer base) can be contacted.
Specific customer groups can be targeted with advertisements and special offers, e.g. young adults, families with young children, business customers.
Customers feel they have a personal connection with a business, which many people like. They are more likely to trust the business.
Negatives of media on the H and C business
H&C employees who use social media may say something negative about the business, which will rapidly reach many people through re-tweets, comments, likes and shares. This may damage its reputation (and the employee may lose their job!).
Negative feedback and complaints from customers about the service they have received will reach a lot of people who may then decide not to use the business.
If messages and statements (e.g. confidential information about the business) are sent by mistake on social media, they will spread very rapidly and are almost impossible to put right.
