GVR: Species and taxonomy Flashcards
Explain the acronym: Don’t kids prefer candy over fresh green salad
Domain, kingdom, phyllum, class, order, family, genus, species
Give the 5 ways how scientists can discover recent common ancestors between species:
- Physical features
- Courtship behaviour
- Genome sequencing
- Amino acid sequencing
- Immune response
What makes up the binomical name?
Genus and Species
What is the flaw with using taxonomic rankings?
No comparison of DNA sequences or biochemical analysis.
Define hierarchy:
Groups within groups with no overlap
Describe four ways in which courtship behaviour increases the chance of successful mating:
- Identification of sexual maturity
- Identification of the same species
- Identification of being male or female
- Can stimulate the release of gametes
Define species:
A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
How does phylogeny classify organisms?
Shows the evolutionary relationship between organisms since they are based on differences in DNA sequences.
How does morphology classify organisms?
Based on shared characteristics
Why is classifying organisms based on physical characteristics unreliable?
- Characteristics may have different evolutionary origins so do not necessarily show relationship between organisms.
Give three reasons why populations may show very low levels of genetic diversity:
- Hunting of population
Define genetic diversity:
The number of different alleles of each gene
Why do some animals display courtship behaviour?
To attract a mate of the right species.
