What are taste cells and what do they mature from?
Polarized epithelial cells that arise from basal cells
What do G-protein coupled receptors let you taste?
Sweet, umami and bitter
What do transient receptor potential channels let you taste?
Saltiness and sour
Type 1 glial like cells
Do not have action potentials or afferent nerve connections
Type 2 receptor cells
Act by secreting ATP that may bind and excited Type 3 and may bind afferent nerves (bitter, sweet, umami)
Type 3 presynpatic cell
Form synapses on afferent nerve fibers
What is the pathway for processing taste?
Taste buds → solitary nucleus of brainstem → VPM of thalamus → insula and frontal cortex

Distortion of and loss of taste
Leptin
Acts on taste receptors to reduce sweet response
GLP-1
Stimulated sweet receptors → increase insulin release
Where do olfactory receptor cells terminate?
Glomeruli in the olfactory bulb

What does activation of the pyriform cortex do?
Leads to rapid habituation
What does activation of the oribtofrontal cortex do?
Gradual habituation
What does the sub ventricular zone generate?
New olfactory neurons
