A
Coup - direct blow
Contrecoup - opposite blow (brain bouncing back against occiput)

Subdural hematoma
A
- Collection of blood b/n the dural and arachnoid membrane
- Acute is w/n 72 hours

Chronic subdural hematoma
A
- Symptomatic after 21 days
- CT will have hypo or isodense crescent

Epidural hematoma
A
- Occurs with a tear in the meningeal artery
- More common in young

Post-concussion syndrome
A
- Sx: HA, fatigue, tinnitus, restlessness, dizziness, blurred vision, insomnia/hypersomnia
- Sxs can persist and pt may not have LOC
- Psych and social factors can increase and prolong sx

AAN guidelines for concussion tx
A
- Hx of 1 or more concussion at greater risk for another
- First 10 days after is greatest risk for another
- Hx of concussion and younger age linked to longer recovery period

Glasgow coma scale
A
- Measures eye, verbal and motor response
- Normal is 15, concussion is 13

Battle’s sign
A
- Bruising behind the ear
- Blood may be from basilar skull fracture
- Look in eat w/otoscope to check for blood behind TM

Tx of concussions
A
- REST until asymptomatic
- Can begin exercise rehab when asymptomatic at rest for 24 hours
