Global pattern of urban change
55% of the world lives in urban areas, the rate of urbanisation to differ between rich and poorer countries
Urban trends in HICs
- Mostly already experienced urbanisation
- 80% of the population live in urban areas
- 1% rate of urbanisation (urban-rural is more common)

- Urban population around 50% (can be much higher)
- 2% rate of urbanisation
Urban trends in LICs
- 30% live in urban areas
- 6% rate of urbanisation (high)
Push factors
Factors which encourage people to leave an area:
- Desertification
- Mechanised agriculture (less jobs)
- Natural disatser
Pull factors
Factors that encourage people to move to a specific area:
- More (better paid) jobs
- Better healthcare and Education
- Moving to be with family
- The idea of having a better quality of life
Natural Increase
Natural increase is the when the birth rate exceeds the death rate, this leads to the population to grow
Megacities
An urban area with more than 10million residents (e.g. Mumbai)
They’re expected to grow from 33 (in 2018) to 43 by 2030
Rural- Urban migration
The movement of people from countrysides (rural areas) to cities (urban areas)
Urban Sprawl
Unplanned growth of urban areas into surrounding countryside
Rural Urban Fringe
The area of land between the outskirts of a city and the countryside
