Growing Methods Flashcards
What is a crop rotation system?
Crops are grown on a rotation around an area of land, a different crop grows in a different position each year.
How do you start a crop rotation system?
divide a plot of land into 4 sections of equal size.
Each section will grow one group of plants, that group changes each year
This is a four year rotation.
benefits of rotation systems are?
soil fertility increased
weeds lessened
Pest/disease lessened - life cycles broken by removing host plant.
Viral diseases can be reduced
Soil pH can be balanced.
name some pest/diseases that rotation systems break up
Parsnip canker
Clubroot of brassicas ( cabbage & cauliflower)
root rot of peas and beans
eelworms in potatoes
How do beans fix nitrogen?
via root nodules, so if you plant brassicas after beans they will benefit from a (N)enriched soil.
