Groups , reactivity etc Flashcards
What are group 0 elements reactivity as a result of having a fu
ll outer shell?
They are extremely unreactive.
As you go down Group 0
Boiling and melting point increases because the atoms and intermolecular forces become larger.
What is the reactivity of Group 1 elements?
The Group 1 elements are so reactive that they react with oxygen in the air.As a result they must be stored in oil.
Group 7 name?
Halogens
What is the pattern as you go down group 7?
Reactivity decreases
What is the pattern as you go down group 1?
Greater distance between nucleus and outer electrons
Greater shielding of outer electron by inner shell electrons.
Transition Metals properties
Shiny
malleable
high melting point/boiling point
conductor of electricity
magnetic
sturdy
dense
ductile(able to be drawn out or into thin wire)
Aluminium uses and why it is used for this?
Uses
make aeroplanes
make cars
make cans
Has a low density
It does not corrode
Copper uses and why is it used for this?
Water pipes
wires
cables
Extremely good conductor of electricity
malleable
Gold uses and why is it used for this?
Jewellry
shiny
very attractive
very unreactive
What is Iron and steel used for?
bridges,cars,electrical goods and machinery
cheap to extract both rust with air and water.Iron is soft steel is not
What is Group 1 known as?
Alkali metals.
