Group success Flashcards
Define group
2 or more individuals interacting with each other via social relationships, often with a common objective
What is a sociogram?
A chart that shows the inter relationships, connections and shared objectives that exist within a group
-The point of doing a sociogram is that it allows the coach to examine the group dynamics that exist within the team
Profile types
Stars- highly popular members
Isolates- infrequently chosen individuals
Pairs- reciprocal partners
Clusters- sub groups
Group dynamics
The study of the interactive processes that occur between people in a group
Because individuals interact and influence each other, group develop a number of dynamic processes:
- norms
- roles that individuals play in the group
- relationships between individuals
- how the group develops
- the need to below to the group
- the social influences on each other
Tuckman’s model of group development
-Model suggested that groups go through each of the stages whilst in a process of development and as a consequence, the rules, relationships and effects on each other change and evolve
Forming- members of the group get to know each other, start to gain an understanding of the task
Storming- roles become established, different types of leader emerge, conflict of ideas, discussion of ideas
Norming- becoming stable and co operative, members agree on the rules, behaviours, methods of working together, development of trust
performing- team works as a unit and works towards goal
What is cohesion?
The dynamic forces that cause a team to stick together
What is task cohesion?
Found in a group that is bound together in a drive to achieve a common objective such as winning
What is social cohesion?
Found in a group that is bound together y social bonds, social attractions and relationships

Faulty processes
Lack of co ordination Lack of communication lack of motivation The ringlemann effect Social loafing
The Ringlemann effect
As a group grows larger, the contribution of individuals diminishes
social loafing
Loss of individual effort in a group due to a reduction in motivation
-Some people in a group that their own personal contributions have little effect so try less hard
Others may perceive that others aren’t trying hard to they feel justified not working
Achieving a teams potential
Reducing co ordination losses- ensure all members of the team understand their role and how it interacts with other roles - engage in drills that develop inter active play
Reducing motivational losses- ensure each individual contribution is identified, develop intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, develop team cohesion
