Define attitude
A complex mix of feelings, beliefs and values that predisposes somebody to behave towards something or someone in a certain way (attitude object)
Define prejudice
An opinion or judgement on someone based on irrational, incomplete or inaccurate stereotypical views
Describe the triadic model
Cognitive component- what we know and believe about the attitude object. E.g fitness training keeps me fit
Affective component -how we feel about the attitude object. E.g I enjoy training
Behavioural component- how we behave towards the attitude object. E.g I attend training
Explain cognitive dissonance
- Tension resulting from having contradictory thoughts/beliefs about something
- Individual is motivated to reduce the discomfort by changing their attitude
- Each 3 components must be consistent with each other
Explain persuasive communication
-Someone such as a coach gives a message to a performer to attempt to change their attitude
Factors which effect the success:
The persuaders status, popularity, credibility, background
The accuracy of the message and how well strutted it is
How ready the receiver is and how strongly held the current message is
