Define anxiety
Negative emotional state with feeling of worry, nervousness and apprehension associated with activation of the body
What is cognitive anxiety?
Thoughts, nervousness, apprehension or worry that a performer as about their perceived lack of ability to complete the task successfully
What is somatic anxiety?
Physiological responses to a situation where a performer fees that they may be unable to cope
-Pulse raise, muscle tension, sweating
What is state anxiety?
A temporary emotional state in response to a particular situation
What is trait anxiety?
An enduring personality trait that gives us the tendency to view or situations as threatening
What is competitive trait anxiety?
The performer generally perceives competitive situations as threatening
What is competitive state anxiety?
Level of anxiety during competitive situations
Measuring anxiety- the STAI
Self report questionnaire in which people rate how they feel both in general and in specific situations
40 questions
The scoring system for the questions fives an indication of the state and trait anxiety of the performer
Measuring anxiety- The CSAI 2
To identify the type of anxiety a performer may experienced, Martens refined the SCAT test and developed the CSAI 2 test

What is visualisation?
The process of creating a mental image of what you want to happen or feel. This reduces anxiety by diverting attention away from the cause of anxiety
What is imagery?
Creating a mental image to escape the immediate effects of stress (e.g imagining a beach)
What is attentional control?
Maintaining concentration on appropriate cues. Therefore the number of errors caused by other distractions is reduced
What is thought stopping?
Conditioning the mind to think of alternatives to the anxiety causing negative thoughts. Used to block unwanted thoughts before it escalates or disrupts performance
What is positive self talk?
Developing thoughts about ones actions. E.g repeating positive statements to yourself
