What is the social facilitation effect?
Being in the presence of an audience creates arousal, which enhances the dominant response?
What is the dominant response?
One’s most common or natural response to a situation, usually a well learned behaviour.
What three explanations are there for why the presence of others causes arousal?
Evaluation apprehension, distraction, and mere presence.
What is social loafing?
When people are working in groups where the individual’s effort in not identifiable, people tend to slack off and not work as hard.
What is the free-rider effect?
When you are working in a group and expect a select few to do all the work, so you sit back and do little.
What is the sucker effect?
Not wanting to be the “sucker” that does all the work, so you lower your effort.
What two ways are there to reduce social loafing?
- Make people’s contributions identifiable.
- Give people individual tasks to perform.
When there is arousal due to con-specifics and diffusion of responsibility, what occurs?
Deindividuation.
What is deindividuation?
When people in large groups lose their sense of self and perceive themselves as a part of something bigger. Often leading to a mob mentality.
What is groupthink?
A mode of thinking in which maintaining group solidarity and cohesiveness becomes more important that considering facts in a realistic manner.
What are some symptoms of groupthink? (8)
Illusion of invulnerability, illusion of unanimity, beliefs in the moral correctness of the group, self-censorship, pressure to conform, stereotyped views of opponents, mindguards, and a strong leader.
