lesson 4
What is the social self?
Self concept → set of perceptions we have about ourselves
Social identity → part of self concept related to individual’s membership in groups. It develops through group membership
Social categorization → perceiving ourselves as sharing same social identity as other category members and behaving consistent with that stereotype
Whats the social identity theory?
Social identity theory aims to specify and predict the circumstances under which individuals think of themselves as individuals or as group members
What does the social categorization leads to?
Social categorization makes people in the same group seem more alike than they really are. It also makes the group seem very different from other groups.
Why is the social categorization important?
Social categorization helps us understand the world and boosts self-esteem by making us proud to belong to certain groups. However, the need to feel connected can make people vulnerable to others’ control. These processes also lead to the formation of stereotypes and prejudices, which are at the root of bigotry, racism, and xenophobia.
Why are groups important?
Social influence can either increase or reduce performance in group.
Dark side of groups: conformity and deindividualization
Conformity→ the process where by people change their beliefs, attitudes, actions, or perceptions to more closely match those held by groups to which they belong.
