Group 7 of periodic table Flashcards
What are Group 7’s known as?
Halogens
What are Group 7’s ?
Non-metals and poisonous
How many electrons do they have on their outer shell?
7
What are Halogens?
Diatomic
What ions do Halogens form during reactions?
Halide Ions
State & appearance of fluorine at room temperature
Yellow Gas
State & appearance of chlorine at room temperature
pale green-yellow gas
State & appearance of bromine at room temperature
red-brown liquid
State & appearance of iodine at room temperature
grey solid
Characteristic of Fluorine?
Very reactive, poisonous gas
Characteristic of chlorine?
Reactive, poisonous and dense gas
Characteristic of bromine?
Dense red-brown volatile liquid
Characteristic of iodine?
Shimmery, crystalline solid that sublimes to form a purple vapour
Colour of chlorine in solution?
Pale Green
Colour of bromine in solution?
orange
Colour of iodine in solution?
dark brown
What happens to melting and boiling points of the elements as you go down
Increase due to increasing intermolecular forces as the atoms become larger, so more energy is required to overcome these forces
What happens to reactivity as you go down the group?
weakens because outer shell is further away from nucleus so harder to attract an electron to fill outer shell
