Gases in Atmosphere Flashcards
What is the composition of our atmosphere?
78% Nitrogen, 21% oxygen and the rest is carbon dioxide, water vapour and noble gases
What is combustion?
chemical change in which oxygen reacts with elements or compounds to produce oxides
What type of reaction is combustion?
Exothermic as it gives out heat
What happens when Magnesium reacts with oxygen?
Intense white flame, White powder produced (magnesium oxide)
What happens when Hydrogen reacts with Oxygen?
Exothermic, Water is produced
What happens when Sulphur reacts with oxygen?
Blue flame, Colourless, poisonous gas produced
What is thermal decompisition?
reactions where a substance breaks down due to the action of heat
What happens in the thermal decomposition of a metal carbonate
metal oxide + carbon dioxide formed
What is the greenhouse effect?
Short wavelength radiation is emitted from the sun, when it strikes the earth, some is absorbed, some is re-emitted as long wavelength radiation, much of radiation is trapped and stored by greenhouse gases
How does increases of carbon dioxide and methane levels affect global warming
They contribute to further radiation being trapped from the sun
