Acids, Alkalis and titration Flashcards
What is the colour of litmus paper in acid and in alkali
red in acid, blue in alkali
What is the colour of phenolphthalein in acid and in alkali
colourless in acid, pink in alkali
What is the colour of methyl orange in acid and in alkali
red in acid, yellow in alkali
How does the pH scale work?
0-3 - strong acid, 4-6 - weak acid, 7 - neutral, 8-10 - weak alkali, 11-14 - strong alkali
How does universal indicator work?
Red is very acidic, green is neutral, Purple is very alkali
What happens when acid is added to water?
Forms positively charged hydrogen ions, the presence of H+ ions is what makes a solution acidic
What happens when alkali is added to water?
Forms negative hydroxide ions , presence of OH- is what makes an aqueous solution alkali
What is neutralisation?
When an acid reacts with an alkali, the H+ ions react with OH- to produce water
What is a titration?
method of analysing the concentration of solutions
