Gross path - general Flashcards
1
Q
name 6 common AGONAL changes
A
- passive congestion - CV failure and reduced venous rtn
- pulm oedema - inc i.v pressure
- pulm alveolar emphysema - laboured ‘active’ breaths
- regurgitation in cattle, sheep
- haemorrhage - rumin and horse = endo and epicardium; horse = adrenal g; pancreas = dog
- intususception = easily pulled out as no fibrin adhesion though
2
Q
name 6 PM changes
A
- colour - hypostatic congestion = red; HB-imbition = staining; bile stain; H2S + Hb = blue-black
- texture - corneal opacity, gas form, softening, drying - mummification
- putrefaction - 4-10 d PM. bacterial prolif and air pockets
- PM clots - chicken fat (sediment in LA usually) and red currant jelly
- tissue detatchment
- PM carcase damage
3
Q
what changes can euthanasia cause?
A
barbituate –> crystals on smooth surfaces (serosa)
necrosis of parenchyma where injected
4
Q
desc the process of rigor mortis
A
at 6-8hrs PM –> reduced ATP –> cant undo cross-bridges = stiff muscles
1-2d after rigor broken by autolysis
5
Q
name some factors which effect autolysis
A
ambient temp temp of body at death time tissue of origin - some faster (pancreas++) natural bacterial flora
6
Q
what is ‘autolysis’
A
cell degredation, release of lysozymes which cause proteolysis
