What is ‘Graphology’?
Refers to the study of the visual elements of language and communication in texts - signs, and symbols
What is ‘Grapheme’?
The smallest and meaningful unit in the writing system of language, such as letters
What is ‘Layout’?
The way the text is positioned
What is ‘Typographic Alignment’?
Refers to the way text is placed on the page, also known as type justification
What is ‘Typography’?
Used when discussing fonts
What is ‘Font Colour’?
Refers to the colour, shade, and hue of fonts
What is ‘Font Size’?
Also known as point size refers to the height and width of a font
What is ‘Serif Fonts’?
Fonts that have little flicks on the ends of letters
What is ‘Sans Serif Fonts’?
Fonts that don’t have the little flicks on the ends of letters
What is an ‘Icon’?
Resembles what it represents
What is an ‘Index’?
Points to something else, almost like a cause and effect relationship
What is a ‘Symbol’?
It’s more abstract, isn’t a literal connection between the symbol and what it represents
What is ‘Orthography’
Used when discussing punctuation, spelling, and capitalisation
What is meant by ‘Spelling’?
Refers to the set of standard rules that govern the construction of words in written language
What is meant by ‘Punctuation’?
A set of symbols we use to break up a piece of text, making it easier to read and to convey info to the reader
