Graphics - resolution Flashcards
resolution
o The number of pixels in a image
o Usually measured by the height and width of the image in pixels
o Higher resolutions will usually lead to large image sizes and better quality image.
o Common resolutions include HD (720x1280), Full HD (1080x1920) and 4K (4096x2160).
resolution - pixel
A basic unit of programmable colour on a computer display and then arranged in pattern to form an image.
resolution - image size
Refers to the number of pixels in an image/display. Usually expressed in
megapixels (mg). Image quality corresponds to resolution.
resolution - colour depth
Refers to the number of bits per pixel.
Higher colour depths allow the image to handle more colours and therefore, allow gradations to appear smoother as the image can handle more tonal variations of a particular colour.
Lower colour gradations mean that the image can not handle as many colours and therefore, gradations will appear jagged and the image will be less vivid as a whole.
binary digits
A pixel with a ‘bit depth’ of 1 has two possible values: black or white
o A pixel with a ‘bit depth’ of 8 has 2 to the power of 8, or 256 possible values
o A pixel with a ‘bit depth’ of 24 has 2 to the power of 24, or 16 million possible values
16-bit: allows for realism and very high range of colour; bigger file size; slower to process and store
