Audio - relationship to file size: file compression Flashcards

Q

compressing files

A

Compressing an audio file makes the file smaller and more accessible, as well as easier to transfer over platforms, devices and the internet (faster transfer rate)

This increases the userbase for an audio file, and makes it easier to store, meaning that many more audio files can be stored in a single space. Compressing files is cheaper as it takes up less data.

Q

Lossy compression - Alongside sample size and rate, file compression can contribute to file size of audio:

A

a form of compression that discards redundant data to reduce file size. However, this means that the image quality is reduced as data is lost during compression

Q

Lossless compression - Alongside sample size and rate, file compression can contribute to file size of audio:

A

a form of compression where all data of the image is kept and reconstructed into a usable form. This means that image quality is retained but file size is larger
