Graphics - File Formats Flashcards
TIFF lossless
used to store raster images. commonly used to exchange raster images between application programs. typically uncompressed
TIFF lossless advantages
keeping high quality
o easy to resize
o high compatibility
o flexible and compressible
TIFF lossless disadvantages
has a very large file size therefore slower to load, process and transfer
BMP lossless
raster graphics. used to store bitmap images
BMP lossless advantages
pixel values modified individually
o recognised by many platforms = high level of
o compatibility
o usually lossless compression o higher quality than JPEG
BMP lossless disadvantages
does not resize very well
o large file size
o uncompression process slows
reading time
PCX lossless
an image file format (file extension) first developed for PC Paintbrush
PCX lossless advantages
data stays close to the original format (maintaining resolution and clarity)
PCX lossless disadvantage
uncommon file format and not widely used. may not be compatible with many platforms and devices
o limited colours
JPEG lossy
a camera compressed format. commonly used method of lossy compression can specify
JPEG lossy advantages
common file format - many people use it
o higher resolution
o small file size for easy transport
and storage – can be easily transferred through the internet, keeps quality (to a certain extent
o high colour range (but colours reduce and blur when compressed)
o compatible and versatile, working on a variety of different platforms
o small file format (due to reducing and compression) allows for faster transfer of images
o high resolution - keeps image quality relatively
o well
o small file size (compared to BMP
or PNG)
o no editing required to print
most convenient for transmission of compressed images on the Internet
JPEG lossy disadvantage
can lose resolution
o lossy file format – loses
o Quality in detail and colour range
GIF lossless
a graphic file that is reduced to 256 colours and tones. GIF can be animated
A bitmap file format that can be used to make ‘digital flipbook animations’
GIF lossless advantages
second most common file format on the internet - compatible with a range of platforms
o portability between many applications and operating systems
o lossless compression because of the smaller file size, GIFS can be animated (several images combined in one file)
o due to smaller storage can be transferred easily through the internet, downloaded, webpage loads quicker
GIF lossless disadvantage
less colours, less compression o less detail due to limited colour
range
