Clause
A group of words that contains both a subject and predicate
Phrase
A group of words that is missing either a subject or predicate
Independent clause
A group of words that stands alone – a complete thought
Dependent clause
A group of words that contains a subject and predicate makes the reader feel there should be more
Conjunctions
A part of speech that join words, phrases, and clauses
Simple sentence

Subject
Who or what the sentence is about

Predicate

The complete sentence, excluding the complete subject
Linking verbs
Links a subject of the sentence to a word in the predicate. They don’t show actions.
Examples: am, is, are, was, were, been, be, and sometimes “feel.”
Predicate nominatives
Word in the predicate that renames the subject
Predicate adjectives
Word in the predicate that describes the subject
Action verbs
Verb that show action
Direct objects
Receives the action of a verb
Indirect object
To whom or for whom or to what or for what the action is intended.
