Gradual Vision Loss Flashcards
What is Myopia?
Near sightedness so distant objects appear blurry (eyeball is too long)
What is Hypermetropia?
Far-sightedness so close objects appear blurry (eyeball is too short)
Whats is a cataract?
Degradation and degeneration of lens proteins resulting in clouding and blurred vision, glare is often the main symptom
Is cataracts common?
Yes very, if causes half of global blindess
How is cataracts treated?
Lens replacement
What is Open Angle Glaucoma?
Intraocular pressure greater than 21mmHg due to reduced flow of aqueous humour so the fluid builds up
What causes Open Angle Glaucoma?
Degeneration of the trabecular network
What is the risk of open angle glaucoma?
Causes optic neuropathy
What are the symptoms of open angle glaucoma?
Often asymptomatic
What is the treatment of Open Angle Glaucoma?
Beta blocker drops and prostaglandin analogues e.g Pilocarpine
What is Wet Macular Degeneration?
Neovascularisation under the macula resulting in loss of central vision
What is the treatment of Wet MD?
Anti VGEF injections to prevent further neovascularisation
What is Dry Macular Degeneration?
When the macula is damaged by deposits of drusen (cellular exudates from cones) causing loss of central vision
What is the treatment of dry MD?
No treatment
What causes Macula Degeneration?
Age related
