Why did the Calverts found the Maryland Colony
the Calverts, who were Catholics, could not worship as they wished, so they wanted to build a colony in North America that not only made money, but also provide a refuge for Catholics
How did African slaves find joy even through the hard times in their lives
Enslaved Africans would tell stories about Africa and sing African songs to preserve their African culture;
Christian religion also became their source of strength
What was the Toleration Act and what colony made it law
Maryland Colony that passed a law that allowed religious freedom in the colony to all Christians
What was the relationship between the colonists and the American Indians like
There were conflicts between the Indians and the colonists, because colonies kept pushing Indians away from their lands as they continue to settle south and some Indians were not treated fairly. Anger grew which caused the Indians to attack settlements which led to war. Many Indians died or were captured, sold into slavery and worked in plantations.
What region was also referred to as the “backcountry” ?

Where did enslaved Africans work? Where did they go if they escaped?
enslaved Africans worked on plantations in one of the Southern Colonies;
enslaved Africans escaped to Spanish Florida where the Seminole Indians provided them with food and shelter. They were given land to grow crops and in return, they agreed to give 1/3 of their crops to the Indians.
What were the “cash crops” for the different regions of the Southern Colonies? (Hint: what made their economies go?)
Maryland, Virginia and northern North Carolina grew tobacco;
North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia grew rice & indigo;
Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina grew corn and wheat
