A

An English Quaker who is the proprietor (owner) of Pennsylvania and Delaware. He wanted Quakers and non-Quakers to live together peacefully in Pennsylvania. He gave citizens of Pennsylvania freedom of speech & religion and the right to a fair trial by jury.

A

Tamanend belonged to the Lenni Lenape tribe. He met with Pennsylvania’s colonial leaders 5 times to sell land in exchange with guns, clothing, tools and other items. Tamanend would divide these equally to his tribe members. He would honor the peace made between his tribe and Pennsylvania

Tisquantum (or Squanto) is an American Indian who spoke English. He worked as an interpreter between the Plymouth colonists and the Indians. He showed them to fish, plant squash, pumpkins & corn. He helped the colonist trade metal and cloth for furs with other Indians. Indians used metal to make tools and jewelry

Blacksmith use iron to make horseshoes and tools.
Coopers use wood to make barrels.
Carpenters and shipbuilders use wood to build houses and ships.
Masons and bricklayers use stone and clay to pave streets and construct buildings.
Tailors use wool, linen and cotton to make clothing.

Great Awakening was a new religious movement in 1720s which changed the way that many people practiced their religion and helped bring people together.

Do you think New York City is a good place for a port? Explain why

A

New York City is a good place for a port, because the Hudson River helped make trade easier. Farmers, fur traders and lumber workers would be able float their goods down the river to New York City. Also the deep harbor in the East River made it a good place for ships to dock.

What role did religion play in the founding and settlement of the Middle Colonies

A

Many religious group lived in the Middle Colonies. Many churches, synagogue & meetinghouse were a few blocks away from each other. Religion became a major part of social life. After religious services, neighbors would exchange news. Some religious groups believed slavery was wrong. There would also be social events among religious groups like barn raising, dances, plays, and concerts.

What were the costs and benefits from immigrants who came to the Middle Colonies

A

Middle Colonies became the home to a mixed of people, cultures and religions. Diversity made Middle Colonies an interesting place to live in. Philadelphia is a city known as “brotherly love”, because people of diverse backgrounds could live peacefully together

How did people in the Middle Colonies learn to do the skilled jobs

A

Young people learned to do skilled jobs by becoming apprentices, who lived and worked with artisan’s family for several years, learning a skill in order to earn a living.

Wealthy young colonists went to college to become lawyers, bankers, ministers, or leaders in government.

Compare and Contrast the Middle Colonies and the New England Colonies

A

Both New England Colonies & Middle Colonies were formed by immigrants.
All trade from both colonies were with England or with other English colonies. Both exported same goods but Middle Colonies exported more wheat and other grains.

New England leaders had strict control over people’s live and did not welcome people who had different beliefs from their own. Middle Colonies accepted religious differences.

Settler did farming in both New England Colonies & Middle Colonies, but Middle Colonies had lots of fertile soil compared to New England.
