How does the HFE gene cause hemochromotosis?
HFE (high Fe) gene normally turns on the expression of hepcidin and hepcidin normally binds ferroportin on the basolateral surface of enterocytes, preventing excess influx of iron in high-iron situations. when this gene is damaged ferroportin cannot be stopped from pumping more iron in –> bad news bears, iron overload
Why don’t vegetarians absorb iron as well as carnivores?
Fe3+ (ferric) in veggies needs to be converted to Fe2+ (ferrous) before it can be transferred into circulation
