Gonorrhoea Flashcards
1
Q
Quinolones (Ciprofloxacin)
Common indications
A
- UTI
- Severe GI infections
- Lower respiratory tract infection
- Pseudomonas infection
2
Q
Quinolones (Ciprofloxacin)
MOA
A
- Quinilones kill bacteria by inhibiting DNA synthesis, they are particularly effective against aerobic G+ bacteria
- Bacteria rapidly develop resistance- by preventing the intracellular accumulation of the drug by reducing permeability and or efflux. Others develop protective mutations in target enzymes

- Prolonging the QT interval
- Arrhythmias
- C.dif

Warnings
A
- Seizures

- Risk factors for QT prolongation
5
Q
Quinolones (Ciprofloxacin)
Interactions
A
- Drugs containing divalent cations reduce absorption and efficacy of quinolones
- Ciprofloxacin inhibits certain CYP P450 enzymes, increasing the risk of toxicity with some drugs notable theophylline
- Seizures, and of prednisolone increases the risk of tendon rupture
- Quinolones should be prescribed with caution in patients taking drugs that prolong QT interval or cause arrhythmias, such as amiodarone, SSRI, antipsychotic
