Golgi tendon Flashcards
golgi tendon reflex characteristics
aka: inverse myotic, autogenic inhibition
causes a sudden relaxation of a contracted muscle
purpose is to protect the muscle from damage due to excessive force
this is polysynaptic and a segmental reflex
What are the afferents for the Golgi tendon organs
innervate the tendon
bare nerve endings with lots of branches
action potentials increase with tension
Ib fiber carries info to the spinal cord
how does the afferent golgi tendon neuron synapse in the spinal cord
the Ib afferent from the golgi tendon will synapse on an spinal interneuron (which will be activated by EAA neurotransmitter) then the spinal interneuron will synapse on the alpha motor neuron of the contracting muscle releasing GABA which will inhibit this neuron and decrease the Action potentials to the muscle (decrease tension in the muscle)
