goal setting and SMART targets Flashcards
what are performance goals?
focuses on your own personal performance. comparing yourself against what you have already done.
why are performance goals considered better than outcome goals?
-no comparison with other performers
-focuses on improving personal performance, so the overall standard of performance will increase
-they are more motivating than outcome goals as they do not rely on others
what are outcome goals?
focuses on the end result such as winning.
advantages of outcome goals?
they can be used to motivate advanced players to achieve the desired effect
disadvantages of outcome goals?
-some performers can be so focused on the end result that their individual performance decreases
-individuals often don’t have control over the end result as it often relies on others performances
why is goal setting needed?
-to keep the performer motivated
-to help the planning of a successful training session
-to keep the performer focused
-to make the performer have a feel-good factor
-monitor progress
what does SMART stand for?
specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time bound
why do targets need to be specfic?
-to make you focus on a clear target/improvement
such as: to improve the percentage of successful passes in football
why do targets need to be measurable?
-for it to be successful as otherwise won’t know if you succeeded or not
-time, distance or numbers
such as: i want to get an average of 90% success pass rate in football
why do targets need to be achievable?
as otherwise may be demotivating if it isn’t
achieved
such as: wanting to improve your pass success rate from 85% to 90%- only a 5% increase so is achievable
why do targets need to be realistic?
-so that it is possible to be achieved, so should factor in your fitness level, time, facilities etc..
such as: an extra 5% success rate is realistic as i am practising extra passing drills
why do targets need to be time bound?
-goals must have a time frame- so you can see the effect/progress of the training
such as: completing your target by the end of the season
